As you digest your food, gas forms in your intestines that eventually is forced out of your body through your rectum as flatulence. Smelly flatulence can be quite embarrassing depending on the situation, and it can happen to men, women or children. The food you eat, the bacteria in your gut and swallowing air as you eat can all create flatulence that smells. Following some basic steps will help you avoid flatulence, smelly or otherwise.

Step 1

Avoid eating trigger foods that you know produce smelly flatulence. These foods could include red meat, eggs, cabbage, beans or dairy.

Step 2

Consume a probiotic to balance the bacteria in your gut. Eat natural yogurt for its probiotic qualities, or speak to your doctor about prescribing something.

Step 3

Eat your food more slowly, because you suck air in with every mouthful. Chew food thoroughly.

Step 4

Buy over-the-counter enzyme pills to help ease your digestive tract and prevent flatulence.

Step 5

Avoid foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup. The small intestine often has trouble absorbing larger amounts of fructose, and flatulence can be the result.

Tips and Warnings

  • Walk for 10 to 15 minutes after you are finished eating to help keep flatulence at bay.
