Wrinkles form naturally as you age. According to the Mayo Clinic, genetics play a large part in how soon you will develop fine lines, but lifelong sun exposure can speed your skin's aging process as well. While no face creams will make your wrinkles vanish, many can refine your complexion and smooth out fine lines. The best face creams will contain retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids or vitamin C, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Retinoids

Many anti-aging skin creams contain retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A. The American Academy of Dermatology says retinoids enhance cell renewal and help your skin shed old cells more quickly, refining your complexion and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. It also can lessen the appearance of age spots and other pigmentation issues. Retinoids are available only with a doctor's prescription. The most common form is treinoin, sold under the brand names Renova or Retin-A, according to the Mayo Clinic. The creams typically are applied at night. However, they also make your skin more prone to sunburn and can cause dryness, redness and peeling, particularly during the first weeks of use.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

You also can use over-the-counter wrinkle creams that contain alpha hydroxy acids. According to DermNet NZ, these acids act as exfoliants and help to loosen old skin cells and encourage new ones to form. This can lessen the appearance of wrinkles and age spots. When you apply the cream long term, it also can enhance your skin's production of collagen and elastin, making your skin firmer and plumper and smoothing fine lines. Marie Claire magazine suggests applying Jergens Skin Smoothing Cellular Renewal Moisturizer right after you shower to achieve maximum benefits. Your skin may sting or peel when you first begin using alpha hydroxy acids. Talk to a doctor if this persists.

Vitamin C

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, vitamin C can be found in moisturizers and sunscreens to even out your complexion and promote the overall health of your skin. DermNet NZ states that the vitamin reduces the signs of photoaging on your skin by helping to neutralize the free radicals that can lead to permanent damage. Long-term, creams with vitamin C can enhance your skin's appearance and diminish wrinkles. The cream is typically applied in the morning and Cosmopolitan magazine recommends using American Beauty Youth-Full Anti-Aging Face Lotion SPF 15. Ask your dermatologist before you add this or any product to your skin-care regimen.
