Orexis Facts

Orexis claims to be a natural, nonprescription male enhancement pill that provides men with both immediate and long-term results. "Natural male enhancement" is a more acceptable term for penis enlargement. Orexis is only one of many similar products marketed online and through infomercials and print publications. However, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) points out there's no scientific evidence to suggest any of them work like they claim.

Company Information and Claims

According to the manufacturer, Orexis natural male enhancement pills is a supplement that allows more blood flow into the penis, promoting better, more pleasurable sexual performance -- essentially, effects of taking the prescription medication sildenafil, known more commonly as Viagra, used to treat erectile dysfunction. Orexis also purports to increase penis girth and length "by 21 percent," encourage stronger erections and make you desire your partner more often. Orexis is owned by Urban Nutrition, LLC, which has been in the dietary supplement industry since 2001. The contact information supplied on the manufacturer's website is: Urban Nutrition, LLC, 302A West 12th Street, Number 276, New York, NY 10014.

Ingredients

Orexis contains numerous herbs, including tribulus terrestris, epimedium, yohimbe, panax ginseng, muira puama, catuaba bark and damiana. Many herbs in Orexis have a history of traditional use. Yohimbe, for example, was used as an aphrodisiac in Africa, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), but its effects have not been studied in clinical trials. Panax ginseng also has traditionally been used to treat erectile dysfunction, as well as for increased stamina and mental performance. However, like yohimbe, clinical trials to support panax ginseng for any use are lacking, says NCCAM.

Use

The manufacturer's website recommends taking Orexis twice daily and 45 minutes prior to engaging in intimate activities. Purportedly, you must use Orexis for at least three months to get the best benefits from the product, after which dosage can be cut down by one-third.

Safety and Effectiveness

Orexis isn't approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a drug, so there's no assurance it's effective. Nor do you have assurance its all-natural ingredients are safe for you to take. According to Mayo Clinic endocrinologist Todd B. Nippoldt, while herbal ingredients can encourage better blood flow, none specifically relax the vessels in the penis, as does prescription sildenafil. Natural male enhancers like Orexis can contain ingredients that can cause your blood pressure to drop, especially if you take medications for your heart. Conversely, yohimbe can cause your blood pressure to spike, Nippoldt reports. The manufacturer of Orexis does indicate it shouldn't be used if you have high blood pressure or take monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), medications used to treat depression.

Other Tips

If a nonprescription product claims to treat erectile dysfunction, be very wary, advises the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This is a sure indicator of a fraudulent health claim. Also, don't believe marketing claims that come with personal testimonies attached and a money-back guarantee. Nippoldt points out many natural male enhancement supplements have been pulled from the shelves by the FDA because they contained undeclared, dangerous ingredients. Some, such as Enzyte, have come under fire by the FTC. Talk to your physician before you self-treat for erectile dysfunction.
