You may consume antifungal foods, foods that prevent or reduce fungal infections, for numerous reasons. You may have athlete's foot or a fungus that affects your pelvic area, such as "jock itch" or candidiasis. Candidiasis occurs when a yeast-like fungus grows excessively and becomes infected. Also called yeast infections or candida, candidiasis is common among women and people with HIV/AIDS, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. For best results, seek dietary guidance from a professional.

Gluten-Free Whole Grains

Whole grains provide valuable amounts of fiber and nutrients, such as B-vitamins, selenium and iron. Grain products that contain gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye, may trigger fungal growth, according to Dr. Charles A. Moss, author of "The Adaptation Diet." He suggests that gluten-free whole grains, on the other hand, can enhance your wellness and inhibit fungal production. Examples of antifungal whole grains include long-grain brown rice, wild rice, basmati rice, steel-cut oats and whole grain corn. You may also enjoy cereals, breads and tortillas made with whole grain corn or rice. Check packaging when purchasing these foods to ensure that other ingredients listed are free of wheat, enriched flour, yeast and gluten. Health foods stores provide an assortment of yeast-free whole grain foods.

Garlic

Garlic has been used in cooking and in natural medicine for centuries. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends cooking with garlic --- a potent antifungal food. Garlic is available in whole clove, minced, diced and powder form. You can also bake garlic cloves until they're softened, then mash the insides for use as a flavorful, antifungal alternative to butter and margarine. Incorporate garlic into soups, stews, casseroles, pasta dishes, meat and fish marinades and other foods regularly for maximum benefits.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, also simply called cider vinegar, is used in a variety of foods. It is also known for its natural medicinal properties, including bringing your body back into healthy balance when you're faced with candida, according to Moss. Apple cider vinegar may reduce fungal production associated with candidiasis, dermatitis, dandruff and a weakened immune system. To reap antifungal benefits, incorporate apple cider vinegar into salad dressings, marinades, chilled tomato salad and gazpacho --- a chilled, vegetable-based soup. Adding garlic to these dishes as well may increase the antifungal benefits.

Yogurt and Kefir

Yogurt and kefir are cultured dairy products that provide valuable amounts of protein, calcium, vitamin D and probiotics --- healthy bacteria that provide protection from infections caused by harmful bacteria. Though additional research is needed, consuming probiotics regularly may help prevent or reduce candida overgrowth, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. For optimum probiotic benefits, select low-fat yogurt that contains live active cultures.
