Depression is a serious illness. Left untreated, it can lead to thoughts of suicide, changes in weight, inability to function in daily life and the desire to harm others. Depression might require prescription medication. Herbal treatments may also help. Always talk to your doctor before taking any herbs to treat depression.
Step 1
Try St. John's wort. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, St. John's wort might be useful to treat milder cases of depression, but it doesn't work for major depression. St. John's wort is sold in the form of tablets, capsules, teas and liquid extracts. A standard dosage of St. John's wort to treat depression is 300 mg three times per day, unless your doctor recommends a different dosage.
Step 2
Use ginseng supplements. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, ginseng seems to be effective in improving mental performance and general health. Ginseng comes in different forms, such as Siberian or Korean ginseng. Each one has different strengths and requires a different dosage, so it's important to read labels and talk to your doctor before taking any ginseng supplements.
Step 3
Try lavender. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, lavender can help with depression, insomnia and feelings of anxiety. Add lavender to boiling water so that you can inhale the vapors. This is an effective remedy for insomnia and depression in both children and adults. Adults can also consume a lavender tincture or tea.
