Teenage obesity is a growing problem in the United States, and it is important that parents talk to their teens in a healthy way about their weight. Although you should not rely on a quick fix, there are some things you can do to help a teen lose the weight fast. The important thing is to avoid fad diets because these have not been proven to help keep the weight off permanently. Remember to speak to the teen's doctor before starting a new diet or exercise routine.
Step 1
Spend at least 60 minutes per day of physical activity. Encouraging the teen to be physically active can help her achieve her weight loss goals quickly. Schools and communities often have team sports programs. Individual activities like jogging and biking can also help a teen lose weight fast.
Step 2
Take time to eat breakfast. Many teens skip breakfast and end up snacking and overeating over the course of the day. To lose weight, eat a nutritious breakfast with items such as whole-grain toast, fortified cereal with low-fat milk, fruit or reduced-fat cheese.
Step 3
Overhaul the snacks in the home. Get rid of any cakes, cookies, ice cream or candy you have in the house. Instead, offer fruit, yogurt, low-fat cheese sticks, carrots and graham crackers for in-between meal snacks.
Step 4
Prepare low-fat meals for the entire family. If you want the teen to lose weight quickly, you should include the entire family without singling her out. Prepare lean cuts of meat, plenty of vegetables and whole grains. Grill, steam and roast your foods instead of frying to keep the meal healthy.
Step 5
Consider outside help to get a teen to lose weight fast. There are weight loss camps and weight loss clubs open to teens that help them lose weight through dieting, exercising and counseling sessions.
