Dryness can cause cracked, scaly and itchy skin, especially on your lower legs, flanks, arms and thighs. Many people experience dry skin in the winter months, when humidity drops due to the dry, cold air, leaving skin vulnerable to the drying effects of forced-air heating and extreme temperatures. Moisturizing lotions can protect your skin from dryness, but it is important to choose the right skin products to avoid further irritation to your skin.
Types
Ointments, creams and lotions are all different ways to formulate over-the-counter dry skin remedies. In an article on the ABC News website, Michel McDonald, M.D., Assistant Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, explains that ointments contain 80 percent oil and 20 percent water. Creams contain 50 percent oil and 50 percent water. Lotions contain a similar ratio to creams, but in an even lighter and thinner formulation.
Considerations
In general, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing an ointment or cream over a lotion because the thicker formulations are more effective than lotions at relieving skin dryness and are less irritating to dry, sensitive skin. If your skin is oily or if you dislike the feel of thicker creams, lotions can relieve skin dryness, especially if you apply them right after you get out of the bath or shower to help retain water in your skin.
Prevention/Solution
Since perfumes, dyes and alcohol can irritate your skin and make it even drier, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing alcohol-free, unscented moisturizing lotions. Switching to mild fragrance-free laundry detergents and soaps also can prevent skin irritation and dryness.
Warning
If regular use of dry-skin remedies doesn't improve your skin's dryness or if itchiness from dry skin interferes with your sleep, Medline Plus suggests scheduling an evaluation with your doctor. Very dry skin might require a prescription ointment or cream. It also could be a sign of an underlying medical condition like eczema that needs professional management.
Expert Insight
Ingredients are more important than price when choosing an effective moisturizing lotion. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most expensive products are not necessarily the best choice. To soothe and alleviate extreme dry skin, the academy recommends choosing products with lactic acid or urea. Products formulated with lanolin, mineral oil and petrolatum can help trap water in your skin, which can keep it from drying out.
