An oily scalp usually leads to oily hair, which can be an embarrassing condition. Usually those with fine hair have more sebaceous glands, which can cause excess oil on the scalp. When your scalp can't properly regulate oil production, you often end up with matted hair near the roots for a greasy, oily look. By using products made especially for oily scalps, you can clean up the oil slick for healthier looking hair.
Dry Shampoo
When the oil from your scalp seeps down into your hair, you could end up with greasy-looking hair. Unfortunately, you may not always be in a position to go home and wash your hair. That's why it's a good idea to keep a bottle of dry shampoo with you. Dry shampoo contains cornstarch, which effectively absorbs excess oil from your scalp. It usually comes in an aerosol can and is easy to tuck away with your belongings so you can do quick touch-ups when you feel like your scalp is extra oily or shiny.
Clear Shampoo
Shampoo that contains additives, extra moisturizers and other ingredients can clog the pores on your scalp, Thomas Goodman, Jr., assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences, tells MotherNature.com. Look for clear shampoos, which are less likely to contain creamy additives and oils for moisturizing hair. It may also be a good idea to switch to dandruff shampoo, since dandruff typically manifests as oily flakes, and dandruff shampoo helps to dry out excess oil.
Boar Bristle Brush
A natural bristle brush like a boar bristle brush is essential to help distribute the oils from your scalp through your hair. The oil glands found on your scalp are responsible for keeping your hair moisturized, but if your scalp is too oily, the oils are not being properly distributed throughout your hair. Brushing your hair with a natural bristle brush a few times each day can help distribute the oils so less oil is found on the scalp. Take care to avoid over-brushing your hair, which can cause oil gland over-stimulation.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel is often used as an astringent or toner on the face to help keep facial oil at bay. But it can have the same effect on your scalp when applied directly to the skin. Douse a cotton ball in witch hazel and dab it along your hairline, or over the entire scalp if you're bald. This will help to dry up excess oil so your scalp looks healthier. A regular facial toner containing alcohol can have the same effect if witch hazel is unavailable.
