Maryland and its eastern shore, in particular, are popular fishing destinations. From January through March, there are a variety of fishing shows, expos and flea markets scheduled to provide equipment, supplies, information and expertise from experienced anglers.
When and Where
Fishing flea markets, shows and expos in Maryland occur during the winter months, when fishermen are thinking about, or gearing up for, the upcoming season. Most are annual events. In January, you can attend the four-day Annual Fishing Expo and Boat Show in Timonium at the State Fair Grounds. February happenings include the two-day Annual Fishing Flea Market and Show in Severna Park and for saltwater fishing enthusiasts, the Annual Saltwater Fishing Expo in Annapolis. Caught-The-Skunk.com is a website that posts additional Maryland fishing flea market events that might not be as well-publicized throughout the state. It is free to become a member of Caught-The-Skunk, where you can also find fishing reports for the region, latest news about fishing and boating and changes to fishing regulations.
Benefits
Anglers can pick up used or discounted fishing equipment and supplies at any flea market or show. In addition to exhibits of tackle, rods, reels, motors, boats and trailers, you can also pick up helpful information. Some events offer seminars that are presented by fishing experts, including professional fisherman, guides and celebrities. Presenters share their expertise on a variety of topics, many of which are geared to specific fishing areas in the state. Maryland's Department of Natural Resources is also available at the Fishing Flea Market and Show to issue fishing licenses.
Networking
Attending a flea market or expo can result in new friends and fishing buddies. As you connect with other fishermen, you can join one of the sponsoring organizations, such as the Pasadena Sportfishing Group (PSG) and the Annapolis chapter of the Maryland Saltwater Sportfishermen's Association (MSSA). The PSG holds monthly meetings with guest speakers. The Annapolis chapter of the MSSA also has monthly meetings and holds an annual swap meet that offers another opportunity to buy inexpensive fishing gear or even work out a trade.
Extras
At some of these events you can have hats, shirts and other items embroidered on-site, have your knives professionally sharpened or purchase customized equipment and supplies. There is always plenty of food, from sandwiches to platters, and some offer beer and bar service.
Costs
Most events have a nominal admission fee. Fees ranged from $2 to $8 in 2010. Vendor fees for a table were mostly in the neighborhood of $25 to $75. A booth at the high visibility show in Timonium was $550.
