Muscle cramps are a compulsory spasm of the muscle that can occur in any part of the body and last from a few seconds to a few minutes. Muscle cramps can be caused by a number of things such as dehydration, extreme exercise or a hormone imbalance. Natural progesterone relieves muscle cramp symptoms by balancing out the hormones and providing more when needed.
Progesterone
Progesterone is essential for the human body. This hormone regulates blood sugar, brain activity and reproduction. According to KidsHealth.org, as part of the endocrine system, progesterone transmits commands to the inside of cells. These directions control how the body functions by regulating hormone production.
Types of Natural Progesterone
PBS cites that in 1943 Russell Marker, a chemist, experimented and found a formula to extract progesterone from vegetation. According to the American Chemical Society, Marker isolated a steroid called diosgenin from part of the plant root. Once isolated, this chemical element contained the same chemical compound as progesterone, and could be used as a substitute. Marker first removed progesterone from wild yams in Mexico, although it can also be found in spice fenugreek and soya bean.
Menstrual Cramps
The uterus, a muscle, contracts during the menstrual cycle. During your period, the contractions are stronger and cause a dull, throbbing pain. Hormonal imbalances determine the severity of menstrual cramps. According to the MayoClinic.com, menstrual cramps often diminish over a lifetime, especially after the birth of your first child.
Leg Cramps
One cause of leg cramps is a sex hormone imbalance. The thyroid regulates the hormones in the cells of the brain and spinal cord. When the thyroid's performance diminishes, this leads to pain such as leg cramps. It is common for leg cramps to occur at night, and in the calf muscle.
How Progesterone Works
Both leg cramps and menstrual cramps can originate in the body because of a progesterone deficiency. According to Natural Progesterone Advisory Network, to remedy the problem you should use natural progesterone, which comes in the form of a cream. When rubbed on the affected area, the cream relieves the pain by providing progesterone.
