Some hair loss every day is common, but your strands can thin more rapidly when you do not take proper care of them. Clogged follicles can inhibit hair growth, and a buildup of oil on your scalp can cause certain scalp conditions that may result in your hair falling out. Shampoo with tea tree oil can help you care for your thinning tresses by nourishing and strengthening hair and keeping follicles clear.

Benefits

Tea tree oil acts as an antimicrobial and can help rid your scalp of the fungus that leads to dandruff, ringworm and similar conditions, according to Holistic Online. It helps to cleanse your scalp and hair and get rid of the buildup of products, dirt and oil that can clog follicles and cause your locks to thin. By keeping follicles clear, tea tree oil stimulates circulation in your scalp and encourages healthy hair growth. This shampoo will also give your hair the nourishment and hydration it needs to stay strong and prevent split ends and other types of breakage that can lead to hair loss.

Types

You can find tea tree oil in many over-the-counter shampoos. The International Aromatherapy and Herb Association recommends looking for a moisturizing shampoo that contains 2 percent tea tree oil and that does not contain detergents, which can strip your scalp of its natural oils. You can also purchase tea tree oil in its essential oil form and add five to ten drops of it to 8 oz. of your regular shampoo.

Technique

Wash your hair once a day with a tea tree oil shampoo to keep your scalp clean and balanced. Wet your hair with tepid water, and then place a dime-sized amount of shampoo in your hands. Work the product through your hair, giving your scalp a gentle massage with the tips of your fingers. Use more shampoo if necessary to coat your hair all the way to the tips. Thoroughly rinse the shampoo out when you finish.

Additional Tips

By combining 1 drop of tea tree oil to 10 drops of almond oil, you can create a moisturizing massage oil for your hair and scalp, says the International Aromatherapy and Herb Association. Gently rub the oil into your dry scalp, leave it on for five minutes, and then follow up by washing your hair with the tea tree oil shampoo.

Warnings

Tea tree oil is non-toxic and non-irritating, but like any herb, it can cause adverse reactions or interfere with certain medications. Do not begin using tea tree oil before you discuss it with your doctor. If you notice any signs of skin irritation or have a sudden increase in hair loss, get medical attention promptly.
