Beer is an alcoholic beverage brewed from malted barley. It is flavored with hops and other sources of carbohydrates, like maize, wheat or rice may also be added to create distinct flavors. According to a Gallup poll in July 2010, beer is the most widely consumed of all alcoholic beverages in the US.
Types
The exact calorie content of an ounce of beer will depend on which type. There are many types, including ales, lagers and specialty beers, such as German Weiss beer. Many breweries also produce low-carb versions of beer that are lower in calories.
Regular Beer
Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram; therefore, generally the higher the alcohol by volume, or ABV, percentage of the beer, the more calories it will contain. One serving of beer contains 12 fl. oz. An ounce of Budweiser beer has 12.08 calories; Michelob has 12.91 per ounce. An ounce of Miller Genuine Draft has 11.91 calories and Sam Adams IPA has 14.58.
Low-Carb Beers
Low-carb beer tends to have a lower alcohol content than regular and is also lower in carbohydrates, which makes it more suitable for those following a low-carb diet. An ounce of Bud Light has 9.16 calories; Michelob Light has 11.16. Miller Lite has 8 calories per ounce and Sam Adams Light has 10.33.
