Low potassium diets are needed for people with chronic kidney disease. Potassium is a beneficial mineral that has been shown to decrease blood pressure. Chronic kidney disease compromises the ability to excrete potassium which can lead to hyperkalemia or high blood potassium. Potassium is found in many foods including dairy, fish, fruits and vegetables, so it is important to identify foods with lower levels for disease management.

Vegetables

Vegetables are an excellent source of fiber which is helpful in cholesterol, so it is important to choose appropriately to ensure mutual benefits. Potassium can be found in most vegetables, including asparagus, cooked carrots, onions, green peppers or corn.

Dairy

Most dairy products are an excellent source of both calcium and potassium. Some choices that are lower in calories include 1 ounce servings of cheddar and swiss cheese and cottage cheese.

Meat and Fish

Protein is an essential nutrient to help the repair of tissues and is an important part of a balanced diet along with carbohydrates and fat. Fish has beneficial qualities including being high in vitamin E, lower in fat and often high in omega 3 fatty acids. Meat and fish low in potassium include tuna, chicken, turkey and shrimp.

Fruits

Fruits are low fat foods that have a high water content and are important sources of dietary fiber and often excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. Low potassium fruits include apples, grapes, pears, watermelon and blueberries.

Portion Control

If you choose to eat foods high in potassium it is important to eat smaller quantities. High potassium foods such as dairy, fruits and vegetables can be enjoyed in small servings.
