Ultraviolet light, or UV rays, from sun exposure can be dangerous. Too much exposure to UVA and UVB rays can increase your risk for several types of skin cancer. A simple way to protect your skin from them is to use sunscreen. However, if you would like to achieve a tan while avoiding skin damage, you may use sunless tanner or a low SPF sunscreen. According to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology, UVA light is responsible for the tanning effect on your skin. Though UVB rays are responsible for sunburn, UVA penetrates deeper into the skin causing equal damage to the skin.

Step 1

Most general retail stores carry a variety of sunscreen and tanning products. Choose a product that has an SPF of at least 15. The product should say that it is for sunless tanning.

Step 2

Apply generously and evenly to ensure protection from UV rays. Cover all visible skin with the product for a tan that looks natural.

Step 3

Re-apply every two hours if you are going to be outdoors. If you are using a sunless tanning lotion without SPF protection and are planning on being indoors, multiple applications are unnecessary.

Tips and Warnings

  • Choose a product that is non-comedogenic so it won't clog your pores. Apply your usual body lotion to flexible areas of your skin, such as elbows and knees, five minutes after applying sunless tanner to blend in the color.
  • Put on latex or vinyl gloves to prevent staining of your hands and fingernails.

Things You'll Need

  • Latex or vinyl gloves
