Careers Offered With A Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science

If you choose to major in exercise science in college, you will study the science of human movement. Other courses during the course of your four-year program will teach you how to help people live healthier lives through exercise, rehabilitation and nutrition. This degree will offer many post-graduation career options and benefits.

History

The field of exercise science dates to the 1800s. The original goal was to improve the health of the working class through dance and sports. However, according to Northern Arizona University, the United States had a renewed interest in physical fitness during the World Wars, when many new recruits were unable to pass physical fitness exams.

Considerations

If you are considering pursuing a degree in exercise science, you should participate in and enjoy exercise. High school classes that will prepare you for college include biology, health and physical education. You should also enjoy working with people and reading health and fitness related magazines and journals.

Types

Many people who pursue degrees in exercise science choose to work as a personal trainer. The job of a personal trainer is to design exercise programs based on her client's health status or goals. Another option is to work as an athletic trainer. Athletic trainers work with other health and fitness professionals to care for and prevent illness and injuries related to sports and exercise. Other possibilities include working as an exercise physiologist, increasing the health and well-being of the general population; an occupational physiologist, helping people recover from job-related injuries; or as teachers, at the primary, secondary or college level.

Benefits

Exercise science is a quickly evolving field. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs for fitness workers are expected to increase faster than the average of all other occupations. continued growth of health clubs, fitness facilities, and an overall awareness of the importance of exercise contribute to jobs for fitness workers. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, starting salaries for those graduating with a degree in exercise science vary greatly. With an undergraduate degree and no experience, you can expect to earn $25,000 to $30,000 annually. Most fitness workers are entitled to use a fitness facility at no cost.

Potential

If you receive bachelor's degrees in exercise science, you may choose to use your degree as a springboard for graduate school and additional training. According to Texas Wesleyan University, those with bachelor's degrees in exercise science often choose to pursue graduate degrees and specialization in bio mechanics, sports psychology, recreation administration and rehabilitative medicine.
