Vegetable soup is an excellent low-calorie, low-fat source of protein, fiber and vitamin A, but commercially produced vegetable soup also contains a significant amount of sodium.

Calorie Breakdown

A 1-cup serving of commercially produced, condensed vegetable soup contains 199 calories, 42.01 g of carbohydrate, 7.99 g of protein, 6 g of fiber, 1 g of saturated fat, 1,300 mg of sodium and 10 mg of cholesterol, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Carbohydrate accounts for roughly 79 percent of the calories, protein for 16 percent and fat for 5 percent.

Vitamins and Minerals

The same serving of vegetable soup contains 200 percent of the vitamin A, 31 percent of the potassium, 8 percent of the iron and 3 percent of the calcium adults should consume daily, according to the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine.

Considerations

A serving of commercially produced vegetable soup contains 57 percent of the sodium adults should limit themselves to per day, according to MayoClinic.com. If you are watching your sodium intake, consider purchasing a reduced-sodium vegetable soup or making your own at home.
