If you've recently discovered small bumps on your scalp, you might be worried. The bumps can be itchy or irritated and may ooze when scratched. Several scalp and skin disorders can result in scalp bumps. You can treat most of these conditions at home, often with medicated shampoos.

Folliculitis

Small white bumps can appear on your scalp when your hair follicles become infected, causing a condition known as folliculitis. This condition usually occurs due to a bacterial infection resulting from damage to the follicle. Damage can be caused by tight clothing, friction from shaving, inflammatory skin disorders, or abrasions or wounds, according to MayoClinic.com. Your risk of developing infected hair follicles increases if you have an immune disorder, take antibiotics for acne or are exposed to hot water for a long period time, among other possible risk factors. Many cases of folliculitis resolve on their own. Oral antibiotics or topical creams are used if medical treatment is necessary.

Head Lice

Head lice is another possible cause of small bumps on your scalp. The bumps are usually small and red, and may ooze or become crusty. They're generally located on your scalp, shoulders and neck. The eggs can resemble dandruff flakes and are usually hard to remove. Shampoos and lotions containing 1 percent permethrin are generally effective for the treatment for head lice, according to MedlinePlus.

Scalp Acne

Acne may be a possible cause of small bumps on your scalp. Acne can develop on your scalp just as it can on the rest of your body, but it is often more problematic to treat, because your hair gets in the way. According to Acne.org, brushing your hair can compound scalp acne, because you run the risk of opening the bumps, which can lead to infection. Scalp acne is generally treated with the same types of topical medications used to treat body acne, except for products containing benzoyl peroxide, which can cause hair bleaching in some people, according to Acne.org. Severe cases may require prescription medication or other forms of medical treatment.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a relatively common condition that can result in small scalp bumps or scales. Seborrheic dermatitis causes itching, inflammation and dandruff. Several things can cause it, including stress, seasonal changes and bacterial infections. Seborrheic dermatitis is usually treated with medicated, over-the-counter shampoos. But if your condition doesn't improve, you may require a stronger, prescription-strength shampoo or lotion.

Considerations

It's important to speak to your dermatologist or family doctor if you're experiencing scalp bumps, especially if they seem to appear out of nowhere or have an unknown cause. Different conditions cause scalp bumps. Your doctor can make a proper diagnosis and inform you about treatments.
