If you have an itchy scalp, there could be many reasons for the cause. The most common reason is dandruff but though your itchy scalp may be frustrating, there are treatments to help relieve the itch. It is important to determine what is causing your itchy scalp in order to properly treat it.
Identification
Scalp conditions such as dandruff, dry scalp, scalp psoriasis, malassezia and seborrheic dermatitis can cause an itchy scalp. Dandruff can make your scalp very itchy, red and irritated and produce white, oily flakes of dead skin. If your scalp is dry, that also can cause it to be itchy. Malassezia is a fungus that normally resides on the scalp. The problem occurs when the fungus gets out of control and this can lead to an itchy scalp. Both seborrheic dermatitis and scalp psoriasis are inflammatory conditions of the skin and scalp which result in red, itchy, flaky skin.
Risk Factors
Itching is commonly associated with dryness. Your scalp has sebaceous glands located near your hair follicles that constantly secrete oil to lubricate your scalp and hydrate your hair. If this process fails in some way, your scalp becomes dry due to a lack of oil. Dandruff, often confused with a dry scalp, actually occurs due to an infection. Malassezia and seborrheic dermatitis can also be triggered by a skin infection. Scalp psoriasis is thought to be a result of an autoimmune disorder.
Treatment
There are a variety of treatments for your itchy scalp depending on the cause. Selenium sulfide and ketoconazole are frequently found in anti-dandruff shampoos, used for treating dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Shampoos that contain coal tar or salicylic acid are used for treating scalp psoriasis. A mild shampoo or added conditioner is an alternative for a dry scalp. Organic or natural shampoos have also been used for treating a myriad of scalp conditions.
Effects
The selenium sulfide or ketoconazole used for dandruff fight the underlying infection in order to relieve the itching. Scalp psoriasis is an overproduction of skin cells. Salicylic acid works by peeling away the outer layer of skin to shed the extra skin cells. Coal tar helps to slow down the overproduction of skin cells while soothing the inflammation. Organic or natural shampoos that have rosemary or tea tree oil help to fight dandruff while being gentle on your hair. Other ingredients such as coconut oil, jasmine, sage, chamomile, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice or myrrh are effective for an itchy scalp.
Considerations
A healthy diet with plenty of water can make a difference in the condition of your scalp. Your hair follicles benefit from the nutrients that you consume. If simple treatments are not effective for your itchy scalp, contact your doctor for the best solution that fits you.
