Testosterone is a sex hormone that stimulates the production of secondary male sex characteristics such as hair growth, muscle mass and a deep voice. In addition, testosterone is responsible for the libido and the maintenance of muscle mass. A few supplements have been proven by science to effectively boost testosterone production in the body. Consult your health care provider before taking any supplements.
L-carnitine
In findings reported in the 2006 issue of the journal "Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise," researchers from the University of Connecticut studied the impact of L-carnitine on post exercise hormonal and androgen receptor responses. Subjects with training experience received L-carnitine or a placebo for three weeks while performing resistance training. Researchers discovered that the L-carnitine group significantly increased androgen receptors compared to those administered a placebo. Increasing androgen receptors on muscle cells boosts the uptake of testosterone, which enhances the utilization of testosterone inside muscle cells.
ZMA
In research published in the 2000 issue of the "Journal of Exercise Physiology," researchers examined the impact of the dietary supplement ZMA, which contains 30mg of zinc, 450mg of magnesium and 10.5mg of vitamin B6, on testosterone levels. Participants received ZMA or a placebo for eight weeks while undergoing training. At the end of the study, scientists observed that the ZMA group experienced increases in testosterone levels compared to the placebo group.
Onion Extract
Onion extract might have beneficial effects on testosterone levels, according to research published in the 2009 issue of the journal of "Folia Morphologica." Researchers gave rats onion juice or a placebo while for three weeks. They found that the rats group receiving onion juice experienced a significant increase in testosterone and luteinizing hormone, which send signals to the testes to ramp up testosterone production.
