The number of calories you naturally burn every day is dependent on a few factors. Knowing how many calories you burn can help you more accurately monitor your calorie intake to reach or maintain a healthy body weight.

Factors

The number of calories you naturally burn in a day is referred to as your basal metabolic rate. Your BMR is dependent upon your weight, height, age and sex.

Basal Metabolic Rate

Women and men use slightly different equations. For women, your BMR equals 655 + (4.35 X weight in lbs.) + (4.7 X height in inches) -- (4.7 X age in years). Men's BMR equals 66 + (6.23 X weight in lbs.) + (12.7 X height in inches) -- (6.8 X age in years).

Significance

You can use your BMR value to understand how many calories you should consume per day to lose weight. To lose weight, you need to consume fewer calories than your basal metabolic rate.
