Hidden calories in food come from many sources. A meal's calorie count can be reduced dramatically by knowing where to look for them. Calories do provide an energy source; however, too many will provide a thicker waistline.

Condiments

Hold that mayo on the wrap; each tablespoon of mayonnaise contains 57 calories, according to NutrientFacts.com. It doesn't sound like much, but sandwiches, salads and sides can have hidden mayo. Ketchup is no more than sugared tomatoes---1 tbsp. of this condiment has 200 calories.

Cheeses

Some grated Parmesan cheese seems harmless but is actually providing hidden calories on that vegetable or pasta. Cheese on a salad actually detracts from this health food; a chicken Caesar salad holds 500 calories due to cheeses and creamy dressing, reports the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

Dressings

Most creams and dressings contain a mayonnaise component, hiding calories in salads, vegetables or even meats. Ranch dressings offer about 209 calories in 45g, and that may not even be enough to drench the leaves, notes CalorieGallery.com.
