Life Fitness produces a variety of treadmill models, including the 4500 HR, which is at the high end of the company's consumer line. While these devices are designed to be sturdy, regular use may cause some of the treadmill's components to wear out or shift out of position. In the case of a misaligned walking belt, you may be able to correct the problem using a simple hand tool. Other problems, such as a worn drive belt, will require you to partially disassemble the machine.
Drive Belt
Step 1
Turn off the treadmill and disconnect the power cord. Remove the screws securing the vent cover to the front end of the treadmill's base. Pull the vent cover free and set it aside.
Step 2
Remove the screws securing the motor cover to the base. Lift the cover upward and pull it away from the vertical upright. Set the motor cover aside.
Step 3
Remove the drive belt from the motor pulley and left end of the front roller. Discard the old belt and fit a replacement belt onto the motor pulley. Pull the belt over the left end of the front roller. Turn the front roller by hand to confirm that the belt will move without slipping.
Step 4
Fit the notch in the motor cover around the vertical upright. Lower the motor motor cover onto the base and secure it in place with screws. Fit the vent cover onto the front end of the treadmill's base and secure it in place with screws. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the treadmill.
Belt Alignment
Step 1
Insert the magnetic end of the safety key into the slot located near the bottom edge of the console unit. Press the "ENTER/START/HOLD" button and use the arrow buttons to select the "Manual" workout program option. Press the "ENTER/START/HOLD" button to confirm your selection.
Step 2
Use the arrow buttons to set the walking belt's speed to 4.0 mph. Move to the rear of the treadmill's base and watch the belt as it moves. Determine which direction you must shift the belt for it to run across the center of the walking deck.
Step 3
Inspect the rear of the walking deck and locate the two adjustment bolts installed inside the end caps; the end of an Allen wrench will fit into the head of each bolt. Turn the right bolt a quarter-turn to the right and the left bolt a quarter-turn to the left to shift the belt to the left. Turn the left bolt a a quarter-turn to the right and the right bolt a quarter-turn to the left to shift the belt to the right.
Step 4
Continue to turn the adjustment bolts by quarter-turns until you have centered the belt; do not turn either bolt more than four quarter-turns. Leave the belt running for several minutes, then deactivate the treadmill and remove the safety key.
