Indulging in a tub of buttery popcorn is just part of the movie theater experience to many people. But if you're trying to watch your weight, you might want to skip this high-calorie snack.
Nutrition
A medium popcorn without butter served at a movie theater may range from 590 to 1,200 calories, depending on size, according to the Los Angeles Times. It may contain up to 980 mg of sodium. Butter adds another 200 calories and 3 g of saturated fat per 1.5 tbsp.
Fat
A medium popcorn may have from 3 to 60 g of saturated fat, the Los Angeles Times reports. If the movie theater pops its popcorn in coconut oil, it will have substantially more saturated fat than if it uses canola oil. About 7 out of 10 movie theaters use coconut oil, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest.
Tips
Order a child-sized popcorn to save calories, or share a larger size with others. Skip the butter. Avoid large movie theater soft drinks if you're watching calories. Eat a meal before you go to the theater so you won't be overly hungry.
