Cod liver oil is an alternative treatment for depression and its success has been noted in research studies such as one published in the 2007 "Journal of Affective Disorders." Cod liver oil is a pale yellow fatty oil obtained from the liver of the cod and it used as a source of vitamins A and D according to MedlinePlus. Omega-3 fatty acids are also present in cod liver oil and are responsible for neurotransmitter signaling, which is how cod liver oil potentially exerts its effects on depression. Because of the costs and side effects of antidepressants, the benefits of alternative treatments may be desired. The use of cod liver oil under physician supervision is advised.

Cost Effective

A benefit of cod liver oil is its cost compared to traditional antidepressants. Cod liver oil can be found over the counter at grocery stores. The cost isn't completely inexpensive, but in comparison to that of a traditionally prescribed medication, it is much more reasonable.

Safe

Cod liver oil is beneficial as the side effects are much safer than those of of antidepressants. Side effects of cod liver oil may include belching, heartburn and bad breath. At very high doses, the blood may not clot as well and nausea may occur. For conventional antidepressants, weight gain, sexual dysfunction and fatigue are some possible side effects according to 2010 Harvard research study.

Health Benefits

The health benefits of the nutrients provided in cod liver oil extend beyond depression. The omega-3 fatty acids found in cod liver oil are also useful for reducing the risk of heart disease, according to the American Heart Association, by lowering cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Cod liver oil is a great source of vitamin D, which is difficult to obtain in the American diet and is potentially useful for depression symptoms as well.
