Premenstrual dysphoric disorder is a debilitating form of premenstrual disorder characterized by extreme mood swings, anxiety, depression and irrational anger. These abnormal changes in mood and disposition are thought to be caused by the hormonal fluctuations experienced during the menstrual cycle. If you suffer from PMDD, your physician can prescribe birth control pills and antidepressants to alleviate your symptoms. You also can make lifestyle changes and take certain vitamins to decrease the intensity of PMDD.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that is found supplementally and naturally in foods like cooking oils, meats, eggs, and fruit and vegetables. MedlinePlus states that it might be effective in the treatment of painful menstrual cramps when taken two to three days prior to and after menstruation. Vitamin E has also been found to be effective in decreasing anxiety and depression related to menstruation.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a vitamin that your body makes upon exposure to adequate sunlight. It is also found in fortified foods like cereals and in fatty fish. According to MedlinePlus, evidence indicates that dietary vitamin D can relieve the symptoms associated with PMS/PMDD, but results are inconclusive in regard to the effect of supplemental Vitamin D on PMDD.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is considered the feel-good vitamin that can increase energy and decrease depression. It has become a popular choice for many women who seek to relieve the symptoms of PMDD. While B6 can help those who are deficient, taking too much of it can damage your nerves. The Office of Dietary Supplements states that there is not enough evidence supporting the use of vitamin B6 as a remedy for PMDD.
