The rice-reduction diet program is a way to lose weight and maintain a healthy weight without surgery or pharmacologic intervention. The rice diet is not just for people needing to lose a few pounds; it can also treat massive obesity, according to a 2009 article published in the journal "Nutrition Reviews." The rice diet for weight reduction began in 1939 at the the Rice Diet Clinic, but today you can follow the program at home with a book titled "The Rice Diet Solution."

The Rice Diet Clinic Program

The Rice Diet Clinic opened in 1939 in Durham, N.C. and is still there as of 2010. The diet program specializes in preventing and treating obesity as well as heart disease, kidney disease, congestive heart failure and diabetes. The program operates on an outpatient basis. The program includes diet, exercise, group therapy and stress management support. The rice diet reduces fatty foods, processed foods, salt and sugar. This helps lower calories. On this diet, you'll eat about 1,000 per day. Low-calorie diets of 1,000 calories per day or fewer are recognized by the American Obesity Association, or AOA, but the AOA recommends supervision by a health care professional when the count is below 1,000 calories. If you go to the clinic, you will be supervised by medical professionals and have access to classes and workshops run by medical staff, registered dietitians, certified stress management instructors, therapists and exercise physiologists.

The Home Diet Program

As a less costly alternative to the clinic program, you can follow the program at home using online programs and following the information in books such as "The Rice Diet Solution" by Kitty and Dr. Robert Rosati. Robert Rosati is a cardiologist and Kitty Gurkin Rosati is a registered dietician. The program includes meal plans and strict portion control. It requires you to count your calories and follow a rigid program by yourself. There is little flexibility in this diet.

The Three Phases of the Rice Diet

The Rice Diet works in three parts. The program begins with detox. You then move on to the weight-loss stage and end with a maintenance phase.

The one-week detox plan includes brown rice and similar starchy foods like quinoa. Vegetables are allowed every day but one, and you can only eat fruit one day that week. Non-fat dairy products are allowed on six of the seven days, too.

When you enter the weight-loss stage, you'll basically follow the same eating plan, but vegetables and dairy drop to five days a week. A serving of protein such as fish is allowed on one day.

During the final stage, you'll eat more calories and lean protein.
