Herbs, although not regulated by the FDA, fall under the category of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The herb psyllium husk fiber comes from the blond psyllium and is used for many medicinal purposes. The shell surrounding the psyllium seed is called the husk and is a rich source of natural fiber. Psyllium husk fiber may have health benefits, but as with all supplements, discuss use of this herb with a health care provider before taking it.

Bowel Regulation

Found in many over-the-counter laxatives, psyllium husk fiber is sometimes used by those who suffer chronic constipation, irritable bowel syndrome and other bowel disorders. The fibrous husk soaks up bowel fluids and stimulates movement within the colon, ultimately producing a well-formed bowel movement. People suffering from obstruction, or a blockage in the bowels, should not use psyllium to stimulate a bowel movement.

Lower Cholesterol

High cholesterol levels can lead to heart disease and stroke. The U.S. National Library of Medicine reports that 3.4 g of psyllium husk taken three times daily may reduce blood cholesterol levels by as much as 9 percent. The husk fiber acts as a metaphorical broom, sweeping the colon free of cholesterol and absorbing fats in the colon at the time of ingestion. Although it should not replace a doctor's prescribed regimen for cholesterol reduction, psyllium husk fiber may provide an aid to treatment allowing for lower levels of prescription medication.

Blood Sugar Regulation

Those who are diabetic must constantly think of their blood sugar, specifically how foods ingested will impact this important value. Anything eaten can impact this number, with sugar and starches elevating it rapidly. The U.S. National Library of Medicine suggests there is a link between blood sugar stabilization and the use of psyllium husk fiber. When psyllium is taken with a meal it will increase the feeling of satiety and less may be eaten at a given meal. Alongside blood sugar modulation, psyllium husk may assist in weight loss and stabilization.
