In general, alcohol has seven calories for each gram you consume. Spirits are more alcohol-dense, thus they have higher calorie counts per ounce than wines. However, you're more likely to consider the calories in your liquor or wine by the shot or glass, not by the gram or ounce.
Types
A 5-oz. glass of wine has the same amount of alcohol as a 1.5-oz. shot of liquor, according to MedlinePlus. Calorie-wise, there's not much difference for the amount of alcohol you are consuming. A 5-oz. glass of red wine has 100 calories, and a same-sized glass of white wine has 94 calories. For a 1.5-oz. shot of liquor, the calorie count is very similar, at 97.5.
Identification
Ounce per ounce, liquor has about 65 calories, whereas dry white wine has about 19 calories per ounce, and red wine has about 20 calories per ounce. Alcohol-wise, red wines average 14 percent alcohol, and white wines are 12 percent alcohol. Liquor is generally 80 proof, meaning it's 40 percent alcohol.
Considerations
While you get basically equal amounts of alcohol per standard serving of wine or liquor, many people add mixers such as fruit juices and sugary sodas to each liquor serving. These additions increase the calorie count considerably.
