Besides being rich in vitamin C and dietary fiber, cranberries contain potent antioxidants called "phytonutrients," which are responsible for most of their health benefits. In addition, cranberries also contain proanthocyanidins, which are flavonoids that combat bacteria. Taking cranberry pills provides a plethora of benefits, including improving dental health and reducing the risk of staph infections. Consult with your health-care provider before taking any supplements.
Reduce Risk of Staph Infections
In findings presented at the American Chemical Society 2010 national meeting, Terri Camesano led a team of researchers who studied the impact of cranberry juice on Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause staph infections. Healthy subjects drank cranberry juice or a placebo and then provided urine samples to researchers. The urine samples were incubated in a strain of Staphylococcus aureus. Scientists observed that the cranberry juice significantly reduced the ability of the strain to form biofilms, thin layers that are conducive to bacteria growth. Cranberry juice prevented the strain from beginning the process of infection, according to researchers.
Improve Dental Health
In research published in the 2006 issue of "Caries Research," Dr. Hyun Koo, an oral biologist, and colleagues examined the effects of cranberry juice on dental health. They found that cranberry juice protects teeth against cavities by making it difficult for bacteria to attach to tooth surfaces. Furthermore, scientists also discovered that cranberry juice disrupts the formation of dental plaque, which can cause tooth decay.
Boost Prostate Health
Cranberries might boost prostate health, according to research reported in the 2010 issue of the "British Journal of Nutrition." Men between the ages of 45 and 70 consumed cranberry powder or a placebo for six months while being measured for prostate-specific antigen, an indicator of prostate health. Scientists observed that the cranberry powder group significantly improved prostate-specific antigen compared to the placebo group.
Prevent Urinary Tract Infections
Cranberry juice might be effective in reducing urinary tract infections, according to the Science Daily website. Dr. Terri Camesano and colleagues discovered that cranberry juice prevents E.coli, the main bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, from forming biofilms, areas where bacteria multiply and grow. This increases the chance of E.coli being flushed out of the urinary tract, instead of causing infections.
