Your risk for developing cellulite depends on your genetics, medications, weight, gender and body composition. Although it is not painful and not an indication of a medical problem cellulite can be troubling when it starts showing up on your body. Lotions, medical procedures and weight loss are all advertised and used as a way to remove cellulite but only a small portion of these methods prove effective.

Identification

Cellulite is often called "cottage cheese" because of its dimpled and bumpy appearance. It occurs when fat cells gather into compartments between connective tissue and push up against your skin as connective tissue pulls your skin down. Men and women are both affected by cellulite, but women tend to be more prone to developing it. According to the American Council on Exercise, men have horizontal compartments and women have honeycomb compartments that allow the fat to bulge more.

Weight Loss

Eating a healthy, nutritious diet coupled with daily exercise can help you combat cellulite. The American Council on Exercise says daily cardio exercise, a healthy diet and two to three strength-training sessions a week proves the most beneficial way to treat cellulite. As you lose body fat you may see a reduction in your cellulite. Lean muscle tissue will prevent new cellulite from forming and help increase your metabolism to burn calories at a faster rate.

Topical Treatment

Over the counter, nonprescription lotions are available to remove cellulite. These products work by applying them directly to the cellulite on a daily basis. They contain a variety of vitamins, herbs, antioxidants and minerals. MayoClinic.com states that these products are not proven effective and in some instances they can cause skin rashes.

Medical Procedures

Some people may turn to surgery or medical procedures to get rid of their cellulite. During liposuction a surgeon uses a tube to suction out fat cells. This procedure will not remove cellulite and it can actually make it worse, according to MayoClinic.com. Another medical procedure that holds more hope for cellulite removal combines tissue massage with laser and radiofrequency systems. This procedure can become expensive because you will need repeated treatments to see results. MayoClinic.com says results can occur after several twice-weekly treatments and may last up to six months.

Potential

Everyone has some percent of body fat which your body uses for heat and protection for your organs. Because of this, cellulite has the potential to develop no matter what you do. Since cellulite is genetic and caused by body fat, some people may have success in completely removing it, while others will always have a small amount.
