Depression is a complication of being obese. Overall, you may have low self-esteem because of your weight, and you may be dealing with other complications of being obese that can cause depression. Carbohydrates are consumed to provide energy to perform activities of daily living. However, over consumption of carbohydrates can lead to weight gain. Therefore, reducing your carbohydrate intake will help you lose weight and fight the symptoms of depression. Over time, you should begin to notice an improvement in your mood as you begin to lose weight.
Step 1
Record how many grams of carbohydrates you usually consume in one day. Multiply the number of carbohydrate grams you consume by 4 to determine the number of daily calories you are consuming in carbohydrates. There are 4 calories per 1 gram of carbohydrates; 40 to 60 percent of your daily calories should come from carbohydrates. If more than 60 percent of your daily calories are from carbohydrates, you should reduce the number of grams of carbohydrates you consume.
Step 2
Choose complex carbohydrates that contain fiber, which will help you lose weight and fight depression. Complex carbohydrates prevent the sudden rise of blood glucose levels, which can help prevent weight gain. Avoid white rice or pastas that are processed, because essential fiber and nutrients are removed.
Step 3
Include healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, fish and nuts into your diet in place of additional carbohydrates. Eating healthy foods will help you lose weight and provide your body with the proper nutrients essential in helping you mentally feel energized and fresh. Be proud of yourself for committing to lifestyle changes and better health.
