Zumba incorporates interval training, alternating between fast and slow rhythms to help you burn calories and tone muscle, according to Zumba.com. A typical Zumba workout lasts around 50 minutes.

Licensed Zumba instructor Debbie Lim says that the number of calories you burn during an hour of Zumba depends on your body composition, the intensity of the workout and the range of motion you use.

Intensity

The intensity of an aerobic activity such as Zumba affects the number of calories you burn.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that intensity is subjective and depends on factors such as age, weight and fitness level.

Identification

The CDC notes that if you're exercising at a level that allows you to carry on a conversation, but not sing along with the song, you're likely exercising at moderate intensity. Accordingly, if you need to take a breath after every few words of a conversation during a Zumba workout, you're getting a vigorous-intensity workout. A moderate-intensity dance session burns around 330 calories in an hour, while a vigorous session burns around 500 calories, according to the CDC.
