Your metabolism is the process by which your body converts food and drink into energy. The amount of calories you need each day to maintain your weight and power all your body's biological processes is your metabolic rate. Metabolism varies from person to person, and some factors involved in your metabolic rate are beyond your control---things like your age, gender, frame size and even your genetics. But if you're looking to raise your metabolism, don't despair; there are ways to give your metabolism a solid boost.

Step 1

Engage in frequent cardiovascular, or aerobic, exercise. Columbia University states that when you exercise, you raise your metabolism immediately while you're working out, and your metabolism stays raised for some time after you're done. The more vigorous the activity, the more calories you burn and the more your metabolism increases. Cardiovascular exercise gets your heart pumping and burns loads of calories, so pick an activity you enjoy and do it often.

Step 2

Begin strength training. Strength training builds muscle, and according to the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences, the more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolic rate, even when you're at rest. Strength train two to three times a week for best results.

Step 3

Eat healthy meals and snacks consistently throughout the day, and never skip meals. Skipping meals causes your metabolism to slow down and conserve energy, and breakfast is especially important because it jump-starts your metabolism after a night of sleep. Start your day with a healthy, balanced breakfast to get your metabolism running high first thing in the morning. Then continue to "stoke" your metabolism all day long.

Things You'll Need
