Detox cleansing drinks are somewhat controversial. Often referred to as the lemonade diet, these drinks are supposed to work by providing the body with nutrients in liquid form, while fasting for the rest of the day. Stanley Burroughs, the creator of the lemonade diet or Master Cleanse, says that detoxing this way will flush toxins from the body. However, this detox is now more closely associated with dieting that cleansing.

Definition

The most popular detox cleansing drink is the lemonade concoction prepared for the Master Cleanse diet. Comprised of simple ingredients, this drink is intended to provide your body with near constant nourishment while taxing your digestive system very little and encouraging the purging of toxins. Six to 12 glasses are required a day to maintain nourishment and to encourage detoxification, according to Peter Glickman.

Benefits

By drinking cleansing detox drinks, you are supposed to experience numerous benefits, according to Diets in Review. In fact, this diet claims to purge toxins from your body through the digestive system, boost your energy levels, encourage weight loss and improve the skin. Once you're done with the Cleanse, which typically lasts a week, it will be easier for you to switch to a healthier diet as well, since you will no longer crave bad foods like sugar or caffeine.

Weight Loss

Detox cleansing drinks were originally intended to help make people healthier and flush out toxins, but now they're consumed to lose weight. According to USA Today, this drink will cause you to lose weight very quickly. However, you will likely gain it all back within a short period of time once you complete the detox. The increase in calories alone following the cleanse is sure to put the pounds back on.

Preparation

To make this detox cleansing drink, you'll need water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Mix together 2 tbsp. of lemon juice, 2 tbsp. of maple syrup and 1/10 tsp. of cayenne pepper. Pour warm water over the mixture until you fill up a glass. Or, you can double or triple the ingredients to make a big jug of this lemonade to carry around all day to drink from when you get hungry. Unfortunately, this mixture does not provide anything out of the ordinary when it comes to nutrition, says USA Today.

Considerations

According to USA Today, there is no medical evidence to back of up the claims made by Burroughs and other proponents of this cleansing drink. This kind of fasting will not purge your body of toxins and will only cause short term weight loss. It can also negatively impact your health, causing numerous side effects like digestive upset, headaches, diarrhea and dehydration.
