If you need to wash your hair and are short on time, dry shampoos provide the solution. Dry shampoos, hair cleansers that can be applied to dry hair, work by soaking up sebum and dirt, according to Slate. They typically consist of a base of talc, cornstarch, potato or rice. When you brush out the powder, manufacturers claim that you're also brushing away sebum and dirt. They may come in two forms, dry powder or mist.

Step 1

Wear clothing that you don't mind getting powder or mist on, or sling a towel over your shoulders.

Step 2

Brush hair so that there are no tangles, recommends the StyleBakeryBeauty website. Be sure that hair is dry.

Step 3

Shake can vigorously, if you're using a shampoo mist. Lightly spritz all over hair, keeping the can 8 to 12 inches from your head.

Step 4

Sprinkle the powder into your scalp, if you're using a dry powder. Massage into your scalp, then brush through your hair.

Step 5

Leave product in for one to two minutes, giving it time to soak up the hair sebum and dirt.

Step 6

Comb the product out of your hair. Turn your head upside down to be sure to get all sections of hair. Use a hair dryer to speed up the process. Style as usual.
