Experts consider breast-feeding, also known as lactation and nursing, the best method for feeding babies, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, or ACOG. The practice not only provides the exact nutrients your baby needs for good health and proper growth, but it also helps mothers bond with their babies and save money on milk.
Calorie Requirements
A woman typically requires approximately 500 additional calories each day while she breast-feeds her baby, according to ACOG. The extra calories provide the energy and nutrients her body needs to produce breast milk.
Weight Benefits
Although women who nurse their baby need to consume more calories each day, breast-feeding usually does not lead to weight gain. In fact, nursing mothers often lose the weight they gained while pregnant faster than mothers who decide to bottle-feed their babies, says ACOG.
Diet Considerations
Eating a balanced, nutritious diet and avoiding high-fat and sugar-filled foods are essential when mothers breast-feed. Nursing women should also drink at least 8 cups of water or other fluids each day to remain sufficiently hydrated. Healthy beverage choices include those with minerals and vitamins and little or no caffeine, such as milk and 100 percent fruit and vegetable juices.
