The colon is the last part of the digestive system and is responsible for absorbing the remaining water from indigestible food, accepting and storing food remains not digested by the small intestine and to eliminate solid waste, according to Larry Trivieri, et al., in the book "Alternative Medicine." Over time, toxins can accumulate in the colon causing autointoxication. Eating certain fruits can help to cleanse the colon while also contributing to your overall health.

Apples

Apples are naturally rich in pectin, which helps to remove unwanted metals and toxins, reduces the occurrence of free-radical damage, helps to lower cholesterol and can reduce the risk of heart disease and gallstones, according to Phyllis Balch in the book "Prescription for Nutritional Healing." The skin of apples contains an abundance of phytochemicals that may have anti-carcinogenic properties to safeguard the colon from cancer or polyps, Earl Mindell says in the book "Dr. Earl Mindell's Amazing Apple Cider Vinegar." These flavonoids and polyphenoles can help cleanse the liver and colon and may be able to slow cancer growth by up to 43 percent, Mindell says.

Blueberries

The 2007 article "Cancer-Proof Your Body" published in "Men's Health" says that blueberries can help protect your colon from cancer due to the presence of pterostilbene. Blueberries also provide an ample amount of vitamin C and E, as well as the trace mineral manganese. Vitamin C and E are powerful antioxidants that help to remove toxins from the colon while preventing oxidative stress. They are also rich in anthocyanins, which help to reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and age-associated health conditions, according to Myrna and Mark Goldstein in the book "Healthy Foods."

Grapefruit

Grapefruit is naturally high in fiber, approximately 10 g of dietary fiber per medium grapefruit, and also contains essential vitamins and nutrients, according to Roger Bezanis in the book "Diagnostic Face Reading and Holistic Healing." Grapefruit is essentially beneficial to the colon as it can help remove accumulated toxins while encouraging healthy and regular bowel movements. Grapefruit is exceptionally high in vitamin C and helps to bolster immunity to ensure the body properly functions.
