While whole, natural foods should always be your first choice, if you like the convenience of protein bars and want to include them in your diet on occasion, "Consumer Reports" recommends choosing one that contains high-quality whey, egg or soy protein, and derives no more than 35 percent of its calories from fat and 10 percent from saturated fat. Your best option for a healthy bar is to choose one made from natural ingredients; that offers a balance of nutrients and approximately 200 to 300 calories.

PowerBar Nut Naturals

Even though PowerBar Nut Naturals derives more than 35 percent of total calories from fat, it is very low in saturated fat. The heart-healthy fat comes from the nutritious nuts. It is moderate in protein content, still providing enough protein for snacking, according to Molly Kimball, RD, sports dietitian. Editors of "Real Simple" magazine rated PowerBar Nut Naturals as "Best Crunchy Energy Bar." One bar provides 210 calories, 10 g of protein, 10 g of fat, 1 g of saturated fat, 20 g of carbohydrates, 9 g of sugars and 3 grams of dietary fiber. These bars are certified Heart Healthy by the American Heart Association. They are a healthy option because they offer the wholesomeness of a nuts, are lower in sugar than many bars and offer one part protein to two parts carbohydrates.

Balance Outdoor

Balance bars are high-protein energy bars that offer an even distribution of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. For these bars, about 40 percent of the bars calories come from carbohydrates, and 30 percent each from fat and protein. Two out of the four Balance Outdoor bars earned a "Best Bite" from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the Honey Almond and the Chocolate Crisp. One serving of either of these protein bars offers 200 calories, 15 g of protein, 6 g of fat, 1 to 2 g of saturated fat, 21 g of carbohydrates and 3 g of dietary fiber. They contain high-quality protein, are fat controlled, very low in saturated fat and offer a healthy dose of dietary fiber.

PureFit Bars

What makes these protein bars a healthier option is that they are natural food bars made with high-quality soy protein isolate. They also happen to be Kosher-certified, vegan-approved and are gluten-, dairy- and wheat-free, making them an appropriate choice for individuals who suffer from food allergies or intolerances. They also do not contain sugar alcohols or artificial ingredients. On average, one chocolate brownie bar provides 220 calories, 18 g of protein, 6 g of fat, 1 g of saturated fat, 24 g of carbohydrates and 3 g of dietary fiber. PureFit bars are satisfying and chocolaty, but, unlike many chocolate-coated bars, do not melt easily, making them an ideal choice for stashing in the car or your gym bag.
