The recommended way to learn how to teach group fitness classes, such as aerobics, is to enroll in a training course through a professional association. Organziations such as the YMCA and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America offer professional training courses and certification in group exercise instruction. The course train teachers on exercise and motivation techniques. Organizations also provide continuing education so teachers can stay up to date with the latest workout trends.

Step 1

Participate in a variety of aerobics classes in different settings. The American Council on Exercise notes that many individuals gravitate toward a specific area of fitness instruction because of their own interests or skill. If you participate in a wide variety of classes, excel as a student and enjoy group workouts, you may find leading a class to be a very fulfilling job.

Step 2

Research local organizations that offer fitness instructor training. Find information about fitness instructor training through local fitness organizations or by searching online. Many gyms, professional credentialing organizations and colleges offer teacher training for fitness professionals.

Step 3

Research the teacher training enrollment requirements. Some professional organizations require specific prerequisites. For example, individuals who wish to enroll in instructor classes with the American Council on Exercise must be at least 18 years old and must have a valid CPR and an Automated External Defibrillator certificate. Teacher training courses may be classroom-based or self-paced, independent study courses, but many require a final written exam. ACE and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America do not require individuals to complete a physical or medical evaluation, but they must complete a written exam regarding instructional techniques and exercise physiology.

Step 4

Complete a training course and gain practical experience by assisting an experienced instructor. The American Council on Exercise says many group exercise instructors benefit from a variety of hands-on training. Research local gyms or health clubs and find classes that are offered by experienced teachers. Ask trusted friends or teachers for personal recommendations. Observing classes with experienced teachers and assisting them will offer a practical learning experience that will augment any written or text-based course materials.
