Medical News Today reports that eczema is a condition that affects the skin and causes it to become dry, itchy, red and cracked. Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, affects primarily children. However, it can affect adults or start in adulthood. A nutrient-rich diet comprised of vitamins and minerals may help reduce symptoms of eczema.

Vitamin C

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, vitamin C may help to relieve symptoms of eczema. A vitamin C intake of 1,000 mg for two to four times per day can act as an antihistamine and reduce flare-up of the skin. More studies are needed to determine conclusive evidence. In addition to supplement form, vitamin C can be obtained in dietary sources. Good sources include citrus foods, such as oranges, lemons and limes. Melons, strawberries and green leafy vegetables are also good sources.

Vitamin H

According to the Mayo Clinic, some studies have claimed that vitamin H, also known as biotin, may be effective in the treatment of eczema. However, that this has not been proven and more research is needed. Including vitamin H in your diet may be option. It can be taken in a supplement or through food. Good dietary sources of vitamin H include liver, salmon, carrots, bananas and yeast.

Zinc

The University of Maryland Medical Center reports that zinc symptoms may develop if you do not get enough minerals, such as zinc, in your diet. The National Institutes of Health also reports that a deficiency in zinc may contribute to skin lesions. Zinc can be obtained in supplement form or in food. Good food sources include oysters, red meat, and poultry. Other sources include beans, nuts and whole-grain cereals.
