Gallstones are lumps that develop in the bile duct or gallbladder. They are produced when chemicals in the gallbladder, such as calcium carbonate and cholesterol, harden and form a large stone or several small ones. Symptoms of gallstones include pain on the right-hand side of the body, back pain, nausea, vomiting and sweating. Certain foods may contribute to gallstone development or aggravate symptoms.
Food Allergens
The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that you eliminate potential food allergens from your diet in order to reduce symptoms of gallbladder problems, including gallstones. Possible food allergens may include dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt; wheat products; and soy products. Other common food allergens may include corn, chemical food additives and preservatives. Eggs may also be a potential source of discomfort and aggravate symptoms of gallstones.
Trans Fatty Acids
Foods that contain trans fatty acids may lead to or worsen symptoms of gallstones. Trans fatty acids may be found in baked goods including crackers, cakes, fried foods, margarine and processed foods. Trans fatty acids may contribute to buildup or blockages in the body. Foods high in fat may not be digested well by the poorly functioning gallbladder and contribute to increased pain symptoms. You should follow a low-fat diet if you are prone to gallstones.
Alcohol
The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that you avoid alcoholic beverages and tobacco in order to reduce symptoms of gallstone attacks. Water or caffeinated beverages may be better alternatives. However, studies on the impact of caffeine on gallstones have shown mixed results. A health care professional can be consulted on whether you can include caffeine in your diet or not.
