What you put into your mouth can show up on your skin. Eating healthy foods can benefit your skin, but eating an unhealthy diet can harm your skin, leading to skin problems such as acne. MayoClinic.com reports that certain foods may lead to skin damage. Avoiding or limiting those foods may help you prevent suffering from skin problems.

Fatty Foods

A high-fat diet is associated with skin damage, reports MayoClinic.com. Eating fatty foods can cause your skin to produce excess oil that triggers acne, warns the Baylor College of Medicine's website. Science Daily.com reports that high-fat foods can increase the risk of acne, and adds that choosing foods that are high in healthy fats -- such as nuts -- over foods that contain unhealthy fats -- such as red meat -- may help decrease the amount of wrinkles you get on your skin when you expose it to the sun.

Sugary Foods

Although sugary carbohydrates such as doughnuts and brownies taste good, they're bad for your skin, because they may raise the risk of skin damage according to MayoClinic.com. Eating sugary foods creates unstable blood glucose and insulin levels, which can trigger increased androgen levels that then cause your skin to produce more oil thus leading to acne, reports Baylor College of Medicine. Science Daily.com says that, if you suffer from acne, limiting the amount of carbohydrates you eat may help clear up your skin.

Greasy Foods

The typical American diet is full of greasy foods, such as pizza and fries. But eating greasy foods can trigger or worsen flare-ups of acne, a condition that causes red lesions on the skin, reports Science Daily.com. No evidence exists yet to prove that certain foods cause acne, but greasy foods often make acne worse for those who already have the condition.

Spicy Foods

Eating spicy foods can cause the skin condition rosacea, which can give you a red and swollen face, reports Science Daily.com. Some of the spices that are most likely to cause rosacea are curry, chili powder, cayenne pepper and different varieties of pepper.
