Weight-gain supplements are available over-the-counter and typically sold in capsule form, ready-to-drink shakes or powder concentrate. These supplements are marketed both to underweight individuals and bodybuilders. Before you take a weight-gain product, you should speak to a doctor. To avoid the health risks of being overweight, your weight will need to be monitored closely.

Features

Over-the-counter weight-gain supplements contain extra calories and protein to help a person pack on the pounds. Many types are also fortified with vitamins and minerals. Brand examples include Boost, Ensure, GNC Weight Gainer and Ultimate Nutrition Weight Gain Drink.

Types

Liquid supplements are more effective than solid versions, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians. The reason for this is liquid supplements increase maximum caloric intake. When you consume a liquid weight-gain supplement, gastric emptying time is quicker than when you consume a solid weight-gain supplement.

Expert Insight

Supplements enriched with fish oil have been proven to help a person gain weight. During a 1999 study performed by the University Department of Surgery at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, pancreatic cancer patients were found to successfully gain weight when given a nutritional supplement with fish oil. The supplements in the study contained an oral form of eicosapentaenoic acid, an compound found in fish oil. The two doses of the supplement given each day during the study contained 310 calories, 16.1 g protein and 1.09 g eicosapentaenoic acid.

Effects

Weight-gain supplements should not be consumed at mealtimes if you desire maximum effectiveness. Regular meals should still be served. If a weight-gain supplement is consumed instead of a meal, an increase in weight is less likely. To increase calories, drink the weight-gain shakes between meals.

Considerations

A doctor is likely to recommend dietary changes before using weight-gain supplements. Healthy high-calorie food options may be suggested, such as dried fruit, nuts, trail mix, whole grain breads, low-fat milk, low-fat cheese, whole grain cereals and starchy vegetables. Extra meals and larger portions are other dietary measures you can take to help you gain weight.
