Epilepsy is a disorder characterized by recurring seizures. Although the seizures are a symptom of epilepsy, not everyone who has seizures is diagnosed with epilepsy. Seizures may affect people of all ages and are the most common type of neurological problem affecting children. Treatments for epilepsy range from medications to surgeries. In addition, supplements containing vitamin B, calcium and magnesium may help calm the nervous system and improve nerve health. Speak with your physician before adding supplements to your diet to treat epilepsy.

Causes

Although the exact cause of epilepsy is not wholly understood, certain conditions may trigger episodes of seizures. Some of these conditions may include withdrawal from drugs or alcohol, hunger, flashing lights, infection, hypoglycemia, hereditary factors, nutrition imbalances and trauma, to name a few. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, in about seven out of 10 people with epilepsy, no exact cause can be determined.

Types

There are numerous types of seizures that can occur. For example, petit mal seizures are characterized by a blank stare lasting for approximately half a minute and are most common in children and teenagers. Grand mal seizures are more severe and are characterized by a sudden fall, sudden cries, intense rigidity and jerking of the muscles, bluish colored skin and shallow breathing. In addition, grand mal seizures may cause loss of bladder control. This type of seizure may last anywhere from two to five minutes. Feelings of confusion and memory loss generally occur after this type of seizure.

Nutrients

According to PubMed.gov, reports suggest that dietary contents and certain foods may influence the occurrence and frequency of seizures. Nutritional supplementation is important for those suffering from epilepsy. Vitamins such as vitamin B complex are important in the functioning of the central nervous system. Zinc is important in protecting your body's brain cells and prevents damage caused by seizures. In addition, magnesium is necessary for calming the nervous system and controlling muscle spasms.

Surgeries

According to the University of California San Francisco, some patients may require surgery to implant devices that will deliver stimulators or medications to emit electrical impulses to help prevent seizures. Other surgical treatments for the prevention of seizures may involve removing the part of the brain that the seizures originate. A procedure known as a focal resection may result in complete seizure control, says the University of California San Francisco.

Warning

If you suffer from epilepsy and are currently taking any medications, you should always consult with your physician or pharmacist before using any other prescription or over-the-counter medications. Other medications may decrease the effectiveness of anti-seizure medications you may be taking.
