According to the Georgia State University's Department of Kinesiology and Health, jumping rope works the calves, thighs, abdomen, chest, back, shoulder and arms. The website ropesport.com claims that jumping rope can burn up to 1000 calories per hour. Furthermore, they suggest that it increases cardiovascular condition and promotes athletic skill development. Building your own jump rope to take advantage of the numerous health and fitness benefits is easy.
Step 1
Determine the correct length of the rope by standing on the rope or wire with both feet and holding it up to your armpits. Both ends of the rope should end at armpit height. Cut any excess rope or wire.
Step 2
Saw 10 inches of the PVC pipe in half and, using sandpaper, sand off the rough edges of the PVC pipe where at the cut.
Step 3
Slide both five-inch PVC pieces onto the rope or wire to be the handles.
Step 4
Place one steel washer at each end of the rope or wire. Tie a knot in both ends of the rope or wire after the PVC pipe and washer and, if using rope, burn the end with your flame source (such as a lighter) to prevent fraying.
Tips and Warnings
- For a heavier jump rope, to increase exercise intensity, use thick plastic-covered cable and weighted handles. Purchase washers that only have a slightly larger inner circle than the rope or wire being used; this will allow for a snug fit.
