Crohn's disease is characterized by inflammation of the digestive tract. According to the National Digestive Diseases Clearinghouse, this disease may affect any part of your digestive tract from your mouth to your anus, but is more commonly known to affect the small intestine. Herbal teas may be used to prevent and relieve gastrointestinal symptoms caused by Crohn's disease.
Identification
Herbal teas made with peppermint and chamomile may aid in relieving gas pain, flatulence due to Crohn's disease as well as improving the overall health of your digestive system. The menthol found in peppermint tea soothes the muscles in the digestive tract by producing antispasmodic effects. In addition, peppermint tea may help to calm a nervous stomach and relieve stomach pain. Chamomile is commonly used for its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties help with digestion and alleviating flatulence.
Causes
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the exact cause of Crohn's disease is unknown. Some theories of what may cause it are a faulty immune system, genetics, diets high in saturated fats or a combination of several factors. Unfortunately there is no cure for Crohn's disease. However, treatments are available to help control symptoms and reduce inflammation.
Symptoms
Some of the more common symptoms of Crohn's disease may include weight loss, abdominal bloating and pain, loss of appetite, fever, fatigue or unusual tiredness and nausea and vomiting. Additionally, this condition may lead to diarrhea that may or may not have blood in it.
Treatment
Using herbal teas as an alternative treatment for symptoms of Crohn's disease may bring relief. However, it is recommended that you consult with your physician prior to self-treating any health conditions. According to Herbs2000, five drops of peppermint tincture may be added to herbal tea to help relieve abdominal bloating and regulate bowel movements. To make a herbal tea using chamomile, add 2 tbsp. of dried or fresh chamomile flowers to a pint of water and boil for 40 minutes. After the tea cools, strain the tea into a cup. You may drink up to 2 cups of this tea at a time. Honey may be added for sweetness and flavor.
Warning
Highly concentrated herbal teas may lead to nausea and further irritate symptoms of Crohn's disease. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use any herbal remedies or medications without first consulting their physician.
