Many of your traditional holiday foods are going to be high in calories. To maintain your weight, splurge on the holiday itself, rather than indulging for the entire holiday season.

Foods

A 1/2 cup serving of green bean casserole has 130 calories, according to the CalorieKing website. A medium baked sweet potato contains 103 calories. A 4 oz. serving of skinless turkey breast contains 153 calories. A cup of home-cooked mashed potatoes contains 237 calories.

Sweets

The holiday season wouldn't be the same without the traditional pies, cookies and other sweets. A piece of apple pie contains 411 calories, according to the CalorieKing. A chocolate chip cookie contains 48 calories. A gingerbread cookie contains 60 calories.

Tips

Choose pumpkin pie, which has fewer calories than many other types of pie. Choose regular-bread stuffing over cornbread. Trim away fat from meats before cooking. Go for skinless turkey breast over thigh. Dark meat is higher in saturated fat and calories. Skim the fat off pan drippings if you are making pan gravy, recommends the USDA.
