Doing 1,000 total sit-ups is a task most people accomplish over the course of several workouts. In fact, the American Council on Exercise states that to build muscle and endurance, separate sets of 12 to 20 sit-ups are ideal, though you can do several sets in a workout.

Form

Lie on your back on a padded surface with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground. For the most benefit to your abdominal muscles with the least strain on your back, lift only your shoulders and upper back from the floor during each sit-up, holding yourself at the top of the motion for a moment. Do not try to touch your arms to your knees.

Time Frame

If you follow proper form for a sit-up, each one should take you one to two seconds. One thousand sit-ups, not including breaks, would take16 2/3 to 33 1/3 minutes.

Effects

If you weigh 150 lb., doing 1,000 sit-ups will burn 156 to 303 calories, according to the calorie calculator provided by Fitness Magazine. This figure and all calorie-burning estimates will vary with your weight, sex, age, intensity of exertion, health and more, so use such calculations with caution.
