Type 2 Diabetes Diet Information

Type 2 diabetes is a non-insulin dependent form of diabetes in which a person's fasting blood glucose is higher than 125. A type 2 diabetes diet focuses on losing weight if necessary, eating low-fat protein to prevent cardiovascular disease and eating carbohydrates that do not cause spikes in blood sugar.

Carbohydrates To Eat

A type 2 diabetes diet includes healthy unrefined carbohydrates such as whole-grain breads and cereals, brown rice and whole-wheat pasta. Fruits and vegetables also are part of this diet, but fruit juice should be limited because it is refined and causes sharp increases in blood glucose.

Proteins And Fats

People with type 2 diabetes should eat low-fat protein foods. These include fish, lean meat, poultry without the skin, low-fat dairy products, soy, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Oils

Specific oils also are important in a type 2 diabetes diet. Olive oil and canola oil are good choices, as explained by the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). Avoid deep-fried foods, as well as higher-fat oils such as coconut and palm.

Carbohydrates To Avoid

Type 2 diabetes patients should avoid eating white bread and other foods made with white flour, and limit white rice and pasta. Starches such as corn, potatoes and bananas should be limited, and so should sweet foods, including regular soft drinks.

Mediterranean Diet

A Mediterranean diet may be the best option for people with Type 2 diabetes, according to a 2009 study cited by U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). This diet is high in fish, cereals, legumes, fruits and nuts. It allows low to moderate intake of wine and small amounts of red meat and poultry.
