Jose Cuervo Tradicional, unlike the cheaper Jose Cuervo Especial, contains only blue agave. This tequila spends six months aging in oak barrels, which gives it a smoother, more complex flavor. Despite its higher quality, however, Jose Cuervo Tradicional contains the same number of calories as any other tequila.
Calories in Tradicional
Jose Cuervo Tradicional tequila--like any 80-proof, unsweetened hard liquor--contains 97 calories per shot. One shot holds 1.5 oz. If you're measuring 1 oz., the tequila will hold 65 calories.
Best Ways to Drink It
If you use Tradicional for a traditional tequila shot--with salt and lime--you will consume only two more calories, keeping the drink under 100 calories. Because of Jose Cuervo Tradicional's high quality, you can also enjoy sipping a glass of pure tequila, which keeps the calories as minimal as possible. Jose Cuervo recommends storing Tradicional in the freezer and drinking it chilled.
Worst Calorie Choices
A margarita made with any tequila, including Jose Cuervo Tradicional, contains a lot of calories. The most traditional margarita--made with tequila, triple sec and lime juice--offers the best choice, containing as low as 170 calories, depending on proportions. A Tradicional margarita made with a bottled margarita mix or served in a restaurant, however, can range from 400 calories to 500 calories and upward, depending on its size.
Warning
People often associate Jose Cuervo tequila with binge drinking, which poses many dangers. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends limiting your alcohol intake to one or two drinks per day- and remember that one margarita often contains two or three shots of tequila, so it counts as two or three drinks.
